Joy Abernathy has worked in the Early Childhood Education field for 19 years total in which 17 of those years have been with Head Start/Early Head Start. Her experiences include being a former Head Start Parent, Head Start Teacher/Bus Driver, Family Service Worker, Nutrition Manager, Family and Community Partnership Manager/ERSEA and Health Assistant. Ms. Abernathy received her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services at Gardner Webb University and is planning to begin her Master’s program at UNC-Chapel Hill in the Summer of 2020.

Currently she serves as a Board Member for Region IV Head Start Association and a current member/presenter of the North Carolina Head Start Association. She is a true advocate for the Head Start/Early Head Start program as she identifies as being “Head Start raised” and she feels that every child and family deserves an equal opportunity and access to high quality early education to prepare them for school and life.
